Argentine Fantastic Cinema at Cannes: “Moviedreams,” Horacio and Axel Maldonado’s Psychological Thriller, Presented at Blood Window

Moviedreams, the psychological thriller directed by Horacio Maldonado and Axel Maldonado, presented its first images at the Marché du Film during the Cannes Film Festival, which runs through Saturday, May 23. The film, currently in post-production, joined seven other films from Peru, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil presented on Thursday, May 14, at the Blood Window Showcase of the Fantastic Pavilion.

Set in a near and plausible future, the story revolves around the creation of Moviedreams, a technology that allows users to access hyper-realistic, tailor-made dream experiences. When the system begins to malfunction and display unexpected behaviors, the platform may reveal far more disturbing uses than initially intended. The film explores a universe where the boundaries between reality and simulation begin to blur, and control over human consciousness becomes a contested territory.

The film stars Maximiliano Maldonado, alongside Valentía Podio, Agustín Olcese, and Alexia Moyano. It also features special appearances by Guillermo Arengo, Clara Kovacic, Anahí Martella, and Mario Alarcón.

Moviedreams examines the extent to which digital technologies can shape human life. “We wanted to explore the human desire to escape reality, but also the danger of having that escape designed by others,” said Axel Maldonado, co-director of the film. “In this story, artificial intelligence is not the enemy, but a consequence. The real conflict lies in the decision humans make to use it either to liberate or to dominate.”

The film is currently in the final stages of post-production and is scheduled for release in late 2026, following its participation in the international festival circuit.

Following its departure from Ventana Sur in 2025, Blood Window presented eight genre feature films from the region in Cannes to international buyers, sales agents, and specialized programmers, further strengthening its role in Cannes as a bridge between creators from the region and the global film industry.

The section was completed by El diablo adentro, directed by Andrés Beltrán; Las lágrimas de Bael, by Hugo Villaseñor; and El infinito, by Fabián Archondo (Mexico); Levantados do chão, by Marcus Neto; and Dentes velhos, by Armando Fonseca (Brazil); Kalkutún, juicio a los brujos, by Jorge Olguín (Chile); and Cybermuchik, by Fernando Mendoza (Peru).
